DoTerra Essential Oils

Are you interested to learn about using natural, effective essential oils to help you & your family stay healthy and happy? Since being introduced to these natural and powerful oils I have been using them for flavouring, relaxation, cleaning, immune support and emotional support. As well as of course supporting my yoga and meditation practice.

What is an Essential Oil?

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. Plants produce oils to fight off threats such as mould, bacteria, viruses or fungus. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, there is an ancient tradition of essential oil use for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.

Why doTerra Products?

When you choose doTERRA, you are choosing essential oils gently and carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.

How do I use Essential Oils?

The main ways to use Essential Oils are Aromatically, Topically and Internally. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends.

Aromatic

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils have a powerful effect aromatically due to the way our smell receptors are linked to the limbic part of the brain (related to emotions).

Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming. Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically. Diffusers that use cold air or water are ideal. However, using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices.

You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand that is then cupped around the nose as you breathe deeply or mix oils in a spray bottle with water.

I’ll be posting some of my favourite diffuser and mist recipes here.

Topical

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localised benefit.

Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption, including light massage and use of carrier oils such as Fractioned Coconut Oil. (NB. it is always recommended to dilute Essential Oils with a carrier oil – the recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil but would increase for children and those with sensitivities). You can also add drops to a warm bath or to your favourite moisturiser. See some of my home made beauty products for ideas.

Topical doses can be applied to pulse points, chest and abdomen, arms, legs and bottoms of feet. Avoid skin around eyes, genitals and broken or damaged skin. For safety always start with a small dose of 1-2 drops (less depending on age and health considerations) and then repeat every 4-6 hours if necessary).

Internal

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history for providing flavouring to food and can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip a mug of peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds. Essential Oils have a more potent and concentrated amount of these compounds.

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolised by the liver and other organs and are then excreted. It is very important only to use Therapeutic and Food Grade Essential Oils internally, such as doTerra so DO NOT use supermarket brand oils in your food or drinks. Even so, proper dosing should be followed to avoid toxicity – go for a minimum dose to trial first.

You can use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices but remember these oils are so much more potent than the dried ingredients so start with a very small amount – in some cases administered by a tooth pick. See some of my recipes for ideas on using your oils. You might also like to add a drop of oil in a glass of water in the morning (Lemon, Grapefruit or Peppermint are all good for getting the digestive system working as well as blends such as DigestZen and Smart and Sassy.
